Welcome to Wishbone

Wishbone Yarns are dyed in small batches. Please make sure that you purchase enough yarn for your project, as even repeatable colour ways differ from batch to batch. All yarn is dyed utilising African rain water which we gather in large tanks in our garden.  South Africa is in the grips of a devastating drought cycle. I do all I possibly can to minimise the waste of water – dye baths are exhausted completely and the water is used over again. Wishbone yarns are washed with bio-degradable, organic Castile soap and rinsed until the water runs clear. This water is then used to sustain our small vegetable and salad garden.   However, certain deep colour ways go through a rich dyeing process that may cause some colour transfer onto the hands when knitting (this is called “crocking” ~ the same thing that happens with new dark blue jeans 🙂

As I care deeply about the environment and the footprint we leave, I am using recyclable, biodegradable packaging wherever possible.

Wishbone Yarn uses international door to door couriers (DHL) to deliver overseas parcels. Parcels arrive within one week and have comprehensive tracking throughout.

Unfortunately, there is no longer an economical shipping rate for 1-4 skeins of yarn. There is a flat rate of approximately $43 which is applicable for 1-8 skeins of yarn, after which the cost appreciates in 300g increments.

For orders larger than 5kg / 50 skeins, please contact me for a shipping quote.

Import duties – if applicable, remain the responsibility of the recipient,  not the sender. And also be aware that DHL raises their shipping costs by approximately 10% at the start of each year.

AUGUST 2021 UPDATE: Unfortunately, I am no longer able to give partial refunds on shipping of double (triple, etc) orders. This is due to weight restrictions, time constraints, PayPal transaction fees and currency conversion discrepancies.  I no longer publish the time of my updates, so cart jacking should occur less often. Please don’t place more than one order if you don’t wish to pay a double shipping fee. There will be more yarn in the next update 🙂

Important Notice for Customers in EU countries: as of 1 July 2021 the European Union has introduced a new Value-Added Tax, applicable to E-Commerce Sales. From this date onwards, VAT will be payable for ordered goods.

Double check your delivery address and telephone number before paying (and please note that delivery is not possible to Post Office Boxes, only to street addresses)

It is also possible to make changes to your delivery date / address once the parcel on the DHL data base – please read notifications from DHL to ensure that all details are correct.

I am able to send parcels almost anywhere in the world, but not all countries are on the site drop-down menu. Certain countries (Australia, New Zealand, South America, etc) have addresses that are deemed outlying or remote by DHL. This has a big impact on the shipping charges, but can often be avoided by having your parcel sent to someone in a nearby town or city.  If extra charges are applicable to your order, I will send these details via email and PayPal. If your country is not in the shipping menu, please contact me for a shipping quote to your area – I am happy to help.

PLEASE don’t choose a country from the menu that is not your own – this creates a lot of time-consuming work for me. For example: if you are in the US, choose “United States & Canada”, not “South Africa”.  The additional shipping fees will be charged via PayPal, including an admin fee and all exchange rate and PayPal conversion fees. Your parcel will be sent once this amount has been settled.

Payment is via the payment gateway PayFast – either by credit card or debit card, or instant EFT.

For overseas customers,  PayFast also accepts international credit cards, although the amount will appear as ZAR (South African Rands). Please check the currency conversion before checkout. (Use Google to convert your currency to South African Rands / ZAR )

IMPORTANT NOTICE: Since the end of 2019, international rules regarding credit card payments to South Africa have changed – if your PayFast payment will not go through, it is necessary to phone your Credit Card Company and give a once-off verbal authorisation for payment.

If payment is not possible via PayFast, please contact me to arrange payment via PayPal, but please be aware that 10% will be added to the total to help cover PayPal’s fees, and currency conversion fees to get the funds to South Africa.

PayFast has recommended the latest version of Google Chrome as the safest internet browser. (Firefox after that and Safari not recommended at all)

Please refresh your screen before authorising your Credit Company to go-ahead with a payment ~ often, in the meantime, an order will have been cancelled due to non-payment, and the yarn might have been sold to someone else.

Unfortunately – due to vast distances travelled by parcels – exchanges are not possible after purchase.

These options are not available at present. Wishbone Yarn is only available for sale at wishboneyarn.com during monthly shop updates.

South African customers – we have moved to a rural area of the Great Karoo. Unfortunately studio visits are not possible, no exceptions.
